My DD is almost 7 weeks old and during the day (only the day) while she nurses she pulls and tugs on the nipple without letting it go. It gets quite painful! She's not done eating and will suck...

That can be very painful! Do you think it could be her way of dealing with an overactive letdown? Maybe try a different nursing position?

i would try a different position as well. sometimes hollis starts acting really weird during feedings (fussing, unlatching, etc) if i just change positions he goes back to suck suck sucking away.
